With Ricky Rahne off to Virginia, James Franklin has announced tight ends coach Tyler Bowen will call plays for Penn State in next week's Cotton Bowl vs. Memphis. Franklin has also promoted Kirk Campbell from offensive analyst to interim quarterback coach. Both announcements were made Friday morning during Penn State's Cotton Bowl media day.
Bowen joined the Penn State coaching staff for the 2018 season after one year in Maryland coaching the Terrapins offensive line. before that, he was a graduate assistant for at Penn State during the 2014 season before joining former offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead's staff at Fordham as offensive football coach. He was promoted to offensive coordinator for the Rams in 2016 after Moorhead departed for that job at Penn State.
This will be the second bowl game in three years with a replacement coordinator calling the shots, and third in Franklin's tenure at Penn State. Rahne had been named the new coordinator before the 2017 Fiesta Bowl, and served because the Lions' interim coordinator during the 2015 Gator Bowl after the firing of John Donovan.
Penn State and Memphis will bully off within the Cotton Bowl on Dec. 28. the sport kicks at noon and can air on ESPN.
